This course is designed for future LCA practitioners. Students are introduced to life cycle thinking and the ISO standard methodology for conducting an LCA, all while learning hands-on in SimaPro. Basic LCA Modeling LIVE

This course provides participants with a hands-on experience building a basic LCA model in the world’s leading LCA software, SimaPro, giving participants an important “behind the scenes” experience in what goes into an LCA model.

Participants will be introduced to primary vs. secondary data, as well as modeling in processes and product stages in SimaPro. Additionally, they will learn how to analyze and interpret the results at a high level. Basic LCA Modeling is also a good course if you already have a solid LCA background but need to learn how to model in SimaPro.

Water Footprint LIVE

What is a water footprint? What data and methods are available in SimaPro? How can you conduct a water footprint in SimaPro? 

Demand for water—part of nearly every production process—is growing fast, and providing enough water is becoming increasingly challenging. As we experience more droughts, extreme storms and rising temperatures, there is an increasing concern over water availability and quality. During this session, participants will learn the terminology used in water footprinting, as well as the basic underlying principles. The global initiatives will be discussed, along with the pertinent guidelines and standards.

Participants will learn about water life cycle inventory data and the water footprint impact assessment methods, available in SimaPro.

In addition, participants will have a hands on experience conducting a water footprint in SimaPro, helping to cement the terminologies, approach and methodology.

Parameters LIVE

Parameters are a powerful feature in SimaPro which can be used to greatly simplify scenario calculations and sensitivity analysis. This course gives students hands-on experience developing and using parameters in the SimaPro LCA software.

Parameterization of conversion factors, assumptions, and changing or uncertain data allows rapid model building and scenario analysis in SimaPro. By building your SimaPro model using parameters, performing sensitivity checks becomes quick and easy—you can quickly determine how sensitive your results are to modeling choices and assumptions. With parameters you can include non-linear factors such as efficiency of scale and even link to external sources when data are being used for multiple analyses.

Take this in-depth course to learn how to best use parameters in your LCA study. Intended for advanced SimaPro users, this course will start with a basic review of how parameters function in SimaPro. We will cover linear modeling and then move on to non-linear modeling, linking to Excel data, and SQL queries. Your instructor will be an experienced LCA/SimaPro professional.

Interpretation LIVE

The objective of this class is to provide students with expert guidance on carrying out the interpretation phase of an LCA, including instruction on the conceptual background and need for interpretation, review of the ISO guidelines and requirements for interpretation, practical methods and tools for interpretation, and helpful hints and strategies.

Delivery of the course material will be facilitated by a detailed case study of a comparative LCA which the instructor will use to illustrate key points and which the students will work with in practical exercises on interpretation.

Modeling Recycling in LCA
