How to meet the rule proposed for Government Supply Chain Carbon Disclosure

June 1, 2016

On par with President Obama’s target to reduce Federal Government emissions by 40 percent below 2008 levels by 2025, the Administration recently proposed a rule that would levy its own purchasing power and influence its supply chain to disclose greenhouse gas emissions & climate-related risk data.

The rule would amend the “System for Award Management for vendors to indicate if and where they publicly disclose greenhouse gas emissions and greenhouse gas reduction goals or targets. This information will help the Government assess supplier greenhouse gas management practices and assist agencies in developing strategies to engage with contractors to reduce supply chain emissions” according to the Federal Register.

With a supply chain that exceeds $400 billion each year, this is a huge sustainability driver by the Government.

Measure and Manage

Measure and Manage

The first step for vendors, if they have not already done so, is to assess the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from business activities over the course of one year, building their GHG inventory.

Once a Carbon Footprint has been measured, then a plan to manage and reduce can be established. EARTHSHIFT can guide you through data collection, assessment and a results driven management plan.

EARTHSHIFT offers a multi-faceted approach to business sustainability, but they all begin with finding out where you currently stand because, as the idiom goes, ‘you can’t manage what you don’t measure’.

If you are interested in finding out where you stand, contact EARTHSHIFT for a free initial consultation.
